DARRAGH

I was really damn proud of Pina.

The shootout from last week played over in my head the entire ride to the casino. She was right, she didn’t find me in the tree line, but I covered myself well. All her shots were excellent despite the wind and the climb to the roof was bloody brilliant. I hadn’t even thought of that.

She was taking to the training well. Better than I expected, actually. I took a note not to underestimate any other tiny, Italian lass I happened to come across.

The sun just began to set over the mountains as the casino came into view. Most of my business had been done over the phone these few weeks, but some things required a visit. Pina had begged me to come, but today wasn’t the day. I’d be a liar if I said I wasn’t a little disappointed at the cold shoulder she gave me the entire hour before I left.

Kieran waited for me in the doorway, smoking a cigarette. He wordlessly handed me one from his pack and jerked his chin to the lobby. “Moe put him in the penthouse.”

I scowled around the cigarette. Kieran handed me a match. “You trying to ruin my carpets, lad?”

Kieran grinned. Dirty bastard. I let these idiots run around on their own for too long. If the past few weeks paid off, that wouldn’t be a problem anymore soon.

The dirty rat working for my Da had the balls to grin when I walked into the room. Someone took the time to tie him to the chair and screw up his face a bit. Blood pooled onto the floor.

I scowled at the mess. “I liked that rug.”

“Hey, don’t blame me.” Blood bubbled to his lips with each word, coating his teeth and turning his smile red.

I pulled a chair over and swung it around to straddle it. The bastard’s smile faltered, but only a moment.

“What did Sean send you to do?”

“Sean? Never heard of him.”

I glanced back at Kieran and some gun runner I couldn’t remember the name of. Kieran smiled and shrugged.

I flicked my cigarette onto my already destroyed carpet. “What is he trying to find here?”

“I don’t work for the micks, alright?”

I took a long drag of the cigarette and blew the smoke into his face. He scowled. “Tell me who you work for, then.”

“No one.”

The gun runner stepped forward, handing me a stack of photographs from the security camera. “He started coming a few weeks ago. Mostly played craps. We caught him tapping into the phone lines.”

I frowned at the photos. The guy was sloppy all around. The wire taps were atrocious, for starters, but getting caught fifty different ways on every camera we had in house was absurd. Sean didn’t send sloppy men, especially not when he was covertly trying to keep tabs on his son.

If Sean sent him, he was just a distraction. If not, my next best guess was the Italians, but they had no reason to spy on me. It was Sean they were after.
